A key breaking off in a lock is one of those moments that stops your whole day. The good news is that it's a quick fix for a locksmith with the right tools.

Key Broke Off in the Lock? Here's What to Do

  • Stop turning. Every turn can push the broken piece deeper.
  • Don't try superglue. Glue can seal the piece into the lock for good.
  • Keep the other half. We can often use it to cut your new key.
  • Call us. We'll come to you with a proper extraction tool.

Where Keys Break

Broken Key in the Ignition

This is the most common call we get. An old, worn key or a stuck ignition puts stress on the blade until it snaps. After we pull the piece out, we'll check whether the ignition itself needs work. If it does, we offer ignition repair and replacement on site.

Broken Key in a Car Door or Trunk

If the key broke in the door and the keys you need are locked inside, we'll handle the car lockout too.

Broken Key in a House or Business Lock

Keys snap in front doors, deadbolts, padlocks and mailboxes too. Same process: extract, test the lock, cut a new key.

Broken Motorcycle Keys

Motorcycle keys are small and break easily. Our technicians are trained to handle broken keys in motorcycle ignitions, and we can make you a new motorcycle key afterward.

How Broken Key Extraction Works

  1. Call us. Tell us where the key broke and what kind of vehicle or lock it is.
  2. We come to you. No towing and no removing the lock yourself.
  3. We verify ownership. ID plus registration or proof of residence.
  4. We extract the piece. Using a broken key extractor, we hook the blade and draw it out without damaging the lock.
  5. We cut a working key. We cut a duplicate from the pieces or by code, and program it if your key has a chip.

Why Keys Break

Cause How to prevent it
Worn-out key Replace keys that look thin or bent
Sticky lock or ignition Have it repaired before it gets worse
Heavy key ring hanging from the ignition Keep your ring light
Using a cracked key Have a fresh copy made early

If your keys are getting old, a spare from our key replacement services is cheap insurance.

Why Choose a Local Locksmith?

Pulling a key the wrong way can damage the pins inside the lock and turn a small job into a lock replacement. A locksmith St. Petersburg drivers and homeowners have trusted since 1987 has done this hundreds of times. We're licensed, insured, and we quote the job over the phone before we head out.

What Not to Do When a Key Breaks

We see a lot of locks that could have been simple fixes if they hadn't been worked on first. Please avoid:

  • Jamming in a second key to push the piece out. It pushes it deeper.
  • Pliers on a flush piece. They slip and scratch the lock face.
  • Glue on a stick. The glue can harden inside the lock.
  • Spraying lubricant before the piece is out. It makes the blade slippery and harder to grab.

If a bit of the key is sticking out and you can gently pull it straight out with your fingers, go ahead. Otherwise, leave it for us.

After the Key Is Out

Once the piece is out, we test the lock. If it turns smoothly with the new key, you're done. If the key broke because the lock or ignition was already stiff, we'll let you know and fix it while we're there so it doesn't happen again.

Fast Help When You're Stuck

A key snapping off usually happens when you're trying to leave, whether that's heading to work, closing up the shop or getting home after a long day. As a mobile locksmith St. Petersburg residents can call any time of day, we'll get the broken piece out, make you a working key and have you on your way. Keep both halves of the broken key handy when we arrive, since they can help us cut your new one.

Broken Key Extraction FAQs

Can you remove a key broken off in my ignition?

Yes. We use a broken key extractor to remove the piece, then check that the ignition is working properly.

Will extraction damage my lock?

Not when it's done with the right tool. Our goal is to remove the key without harming the lock or ignition.

Can you make a new key from the broken pieces?

Often, yes. Keep both halves. We can also cut a key by code.

What if the broken key had a chip in it?

We can cut and program a new transponder key at your vehicle.

Should I try to get it out myself?

We don't recommend it. Tweezers and glue often push the piece deeper or jam the lock.

Do you remove broken keys from house locks?

Yes. We extract broken keys from door locks, deadbolts and other residential and commercial locks.

Serving Gulfport and Seminole.
